Figure It Out is a queer figure drawing community in Seattle that brings together artists and models of all experience levels to **create, connect, and express themselves**. It brings together queer artists and queer models — often people who are new to both — in a kind and affirming environment. Our artists span the full spectrum: from those whose last drawing was a stick figure in high school to professional artists refining their figure drawing practice. The models, too, range from seasoned regulars to first-timers who bravely step outside their comfort zones to be muses for a room full of artists.

The idea for Figure It Out emerged after attending too many figure drawing sessions that felt academic, stuffy, and isolating. There was little interaction between artists, and even less with the models. Everyone felt on display and alone. I wanted to create something different—a space that was social, celebratory, and rooted in community. At the time, there were no queer-focused figure drawing events on Capitol Hill in Seattle, and it felt like an opportunity to fill that gap.

Since its founding, Figure It Out has also become a force for good in the broader community. We regularly donate proceeds to queer and arts-focused organizations, including Lifelong Washington, Outreach International, the youth arts program at Lambert House, and Trans Lifeline. Collectively, we’ve raised thousands of dollars to support these causes.

Our events are hosted at Vermillion Gallery, whose partnership and support of Seattle’s arts scene have been invaluable. Figure It Out takes place on the second Tuesday of every month, featuring a diverse range of models across body types, gender identities, and levels of experience. I oversee curation, coordination, and direction—ensuring the environment remains inclusive, welcoming, and true to our mission.

What keeps me doing this is the joy of seeing people realize they are creative—that they have so much more potential than they imagined. The same transformation happens with our models: they experience empowerment, body positivity, and acceptance. I’m honored to create a space for that kind of vulnerability and expression.
